The new film adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd is released today. A key scene, involving swords and kisses, was filmed in the depths of the woods in Hooke Park last summer and also appears on the poster above.

Much of the rest of the film was filmed nearby too, including at Mapperton House whose estate neighbours Hooke Park. Design & Make tutor Jos Smith has written an interesting piece here about the ironies inherent in the imagined rural that was prompted by a lunch at the film set.
